V.I. MARTIN, a lifelong resident of this community passed away at his home 307 N. Washington Street, Saturday morning. Mr. Martin’s death occurred at 1:30 am. and followed a serious illness of a few weeks. He had been in declining health, however, for the past 4 years. Mr. Martin was born in this city Nov 21, 1851, the son of William and Lydia Martin. He was united in marriage to Mary Corn on Sept 14, 1871, his wife passing away Dec 23, 1928. The deceased was a member of the Spiritualist Church and the Modern Woodmen of this city. He also held membership in IOOF Lodge, New Ross. For several years he had been employed at the Crawfordsville Casket Company as engineer. Those surviving are 3 sons: William A. of Cleveland, Ohio; NJ of Champaign, Illinois and Walter C. Martin of this city; 5 grandchildren, 8 greats and one great great also survive. One son, Clarence, preceded him in death. Mr. Martin was the last member of a large family. His grandfather served in the Revolutionary War while he had 3 brothers who saw service in the Civil War. Mr. Martin was one of triples. He was familiarly known to his friends and associated as Valley Martin. The funeral services will be held at Proffit & Son Funeral Home, Monday afternoon at 2 with burial in IOOF Cemetery.
